THE RIVER LOISACH & ITS FOUNTAINS

From the source at Tyrol up to Bavaria

The Loisach and its fountains are a perfect site for family outings.
If water is your preferred element, visit the Loisach source area. Especially on hot summer days, you can enjoy cooling freshness here!

ORIGIN AND COURSE OF THE LOISACH

The Loisach which is 110 km in length rises in a swamp of the town Biberwier, flowing from there through, passing along the Zugspitze Mountain range to the German border and keeps on running through the towns of Grainau and Garmisch-Partenkirchen. At the city of Wolfratshausen the Loisach ends in the river Isar. Moreover, the water of the Loisach contributes enormously to the production of electricity in our region.

THE SOURCES OF THE LOISACH

The „Loisachquellen“ (sources) at Biberwier, close to the mountain lakes Blind-, Mitter- and Weißensee, were caused by a giant rock fall about ca. 4,000 years ago. The ample area surrounding the source area of the Loisach consists of a shallow lake. You can watch water which is bubbling directly out of many different sources. This lake is glowing with extreme intensive colors produced by chlorella and water. At this spot, you can relax perfectly during or after a hiking tour. Or, practice some refreshing hydrotherapeutic exercises.

You will find a detailed description of this tour at our  toursportal.

THE BIKE PATH ALONG THE LOISACH

You can cycle on this ca. 115 kilometers long bike path - passing the border between Germany and Austria - from the Loisach sources at Biberwier up to the mouth into the river Isar at Wolfratshausen.

You can ride this tour leisurely with several breaks or you finish sportsmanlike in just one day. It does not really matter, this patch leads anyway you through an extremely impressive mountain area offering different splendid views to the Zugspitze. Many sources, lakes and moors provide varied scenery with their unique fauna during your ride. Just try it - it’s worth the effort.

KAYAK, CANOE & RAFTING

If you want to have extraordinary and fascinating adventures in nature, you can ride on the Loisach with a kayak or a canoe. But caution: the way between the national border at the hamlet Griessen and Garmisch-Partenkirchen is also the solely approved route for kayak world championships in Germany. It features very difficult parts. Only very experienced canoeists should try it. For beginners, we highly recommend to be accompanied by a certified trainer in this canoeing area. Alternatively, you can also join a group rafting tour organized by the instructors.
